Metroid

Metroid (1986.)
Gaming platform: Nintendo Entertainment System

-Created by Nintendo
-First game in the "Metroid" franchise

Story

The story takes place in space. Space pirates have attacked a Galactic Federation-owned space research vessel and stolen creatures called metroids. Metroids are floating parasite creatures that drain the life energy from other organisms by latching onto them. The space pirates' plan is to multiply the metroids and use them as biological weapons. The Galactic Federation locates the space pirates' base of operations on planet Zebes. They assault the planet, but become forced to retreat. As a last resort, they hire the greatest of all bounty hunters, Samus Aran to infiltrate planet Zebes and destroy Mother Brain, the mechanical life-form that controls the planet's fortress and its defenses.

Gameplay

Metroid is an action-adventure game. It's a mixture of Super Mario Bros.' platforming and Zelda's exploration and character upgrading. Your main form of attack is Samus' arm cannon which is short-ranged in the beginning, but can be upgraded. There are a lot of upgrades to collect such as the morph ball (which is iconic to the series), the ice beam, wave beam, high jump, screw attack, and others. The game makes you feel lost and helpless in its giant maze. You are free to explore and you can draw your own map as you go. Energy tanks are very important as they increase your energy capacity (you can take more damage).

Final thoughts

Metroid was very fun, and difficult. I got lost sometimes even though I was sketching a map. Some areas are very similar or even look exactly the same, so you can get confused. The music is very atmospheric, it was inspired by the movie "Alien". The graphics match the creepiness of the space pirates' fortress, but are colorful at the same time. All in all, a fun game.
